Museo del Prado
Few visitors to Madrid would want to miss out on a visit to one of the world major art centres. Lovers of Spanish art will particularly enjoy the works of three of its greatest masters: Velazquez, Goya and El Greco, but will also have the chance yo admire works by other Spanish artists such as de Ribera and Murillo, together with representatives of the Dutch and Italian schools. Such an impressive museum is worth more than one visit, also because fewer than half of the collection is ever displayed at any given time.
Palacio Real
This impressive italian classicist-baroque palace, with its more than 2800 rooms, was built under Philip V after the burning up in 1734 of the previous fortress (the Alcazar) of the Hasburgo. Actually around 50 halls are open to public, starting from the royal pharmacy, with countless bottles of medicines, continuing with an amazing collection of arms and armours and culminating, after going up a magnificent staircase, in the royal halls. The throne all is particularly remarkable, with dark red walls and a ceiling decorated by Tiepolo.
Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza
Visitors cannot forget to visit the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, with its collection of paintings belonging to seven centuries: from the gothic period to the 20th century. Together with the Prado and Reina Sofia Museums it is part of the so-called "Arts triangle" of Madrid.
El Madrid de los Austrias
The imperial legacy of Hasburgo kings (Carlos I, Felipe II and their successors) can best be seen in the area surrounding the Puerta del Sol, Madrid's official central point. A short stroll westbound ends up in Plaza Mayor, for centuries the location of royal celebrations, autos-de-fe and bullfights, and today teeming with open-air cafes. Proceeding southwards you will find the Baroque Basilica de San Isidro which houses the remains of the city's patron saint, while West of the square there is the 17th-century Ayuntamiento (town hall), a typical building of the Hasburgo age, with a granite structure and slate spires.
