The original name of Astor House Hotel is Richard Hotel, the building of which can be dated back to 1846. It was the first western hotel in the Far East.It has a history of more than 150 years, experiencing the five generations of Dao Guang, Xian Feng, Tong Zhi, GuangXu and Xuan Tong of Qing Dynasty, leaping over the Republic of China and stepping into new China. Astor House Hotel was the first well-known luxurious hotel run by Western businessmen in China as well as in the Far East with a long history and profound significance. The first electric light in China was lit here; the first telephone of China was installed here; the first stock exchange of China was declared open here; Western films were first shown here after they were introduced to China and many! distinguished figures of the world once stayed at this hotel, including: In 1879, the former American President Grant; In 1920, the famous British Philosopher Russell; In 1922, the famous Scientist Albert Einstein; In 1931 and 1936, the outstanding master in the field of film *Charles Chaplin* This hotel is famed for its unique style of architecture and long history. Classic Victorian and Baroque architechre is on display at the Astor House Hotel. In recent years, with local renovation and reformation, Astor House Hotel has taken on a completely new look.
