The Abbey Hotel takes its name from the 13th Century Dominican Abbey whose ruins can be seen from the hotel. This Dominican Abbey was founded in 1253 by Felim O'Connor, the last High King of Connaught. Roscommon Abbey, located to the rear of the Hotel - dates back to 1253 when it was a Dominican Priory, the ruins can now be viewed from the hotel.
